And she's not down with being the best choice out of a field of one. But Holden never gave a single indication he saw her, Naomi, as anything other than another respected crewmate. Naomi realized he actually was a good guy, really caring and respectful, and she fell. Not leading her own, not putting her down, just being a good XO and a friendly crewmate. There was a gal who wasn't all that attractive, totally head over heels for Holden, and he just treated her nicely. Then the really painful part, and Miller's trying really hard to pretend he can't hear this part, is that she explains when she fell in love with Holden. Meanwhile, he'd slept with at least ten other women.
She tells him he's not in love with her, and uses examples like the fact that they'd been on a ship together for five years and never once did he show more than a friendly interest in her. They sum up their experience with, "That was ugly," and "Yeah." Later, Miller wakes up again to hear Holden stupidly trying to confess his feeling with Naomi and her telling him to basically get his shit together first. Holden's on another bed and also looking like shit. When he wakes up, he feels fine, which means he's on "pretty nearly all the narcotics there were." It's funny how he looks around the medbay seriously for the first time and thinks it looks like one of those sets for an entertainment feed. Naomi jokes that they had a bay stocked for fifteen soldiers and that they used about half of it just on Miller and Holden.
He's been under treatment for a solid thirty-six hours, and the Martian military-grade automatic medical tech had tried to declare him past saving more than once. (Hey, also a moment of foreshadowing.) As he becomes more coherent, he realizes he's on a ship that's under thrust, and that Naomi is not Julie. It takes a while before he can really think clearly-like, one point he opens his eyes and sees all the medbay tubes and stuff sticking out of his body while he feels sick, and his first thought is he got infected by the Phoebe bug.
